Gip's Place Blues in Alabama

We don’t always think of the blues when Alabama is mentioned, but the blues is “alive and well” in Alabama. We had the opportunity to spend an evening at Gip’s Place in outskirts of Birmingham. Located in back of Henry Gipson’s house, Gip’s juke joint is a hidden treasure rich in the history of the blues.

Mr. Gip, along with Lenny Madden and Hank Moore, were gracious hosts introducing us to all in attendance and making sure we had a great time!

Darwin’s Blues

Ernie, the new owner, is keeping Darwin’s in the Blues. This is the place to see legendary blues acts in the suburbs of Atlanta. This small and friendly dive bar has hosted national acts like Ana Popovic, Walter Trout, Nick Moss and the Fliptops, as well as incredible local blues artists like Rod Hamdallah, Truette Lollis, Mudcat, Beau Hall, and Harpolicious.

Northside Tavern

The Northside Tavern has been a mainstay of Atlanta blues since the early 70′s. It’s off of I-75 on Howell Mill road in an area that is undergoing regentrification. It has been and continues to be the host to notable Blues artists like Mudcat, Bill Sheffield, the Breeze Kings, and the late Sean Costello. The Northside has live Blues seven days a week.
